Perfume Trivia | How Perfume is Made

A Small Journey to Create Fragrance

I believe that creating perfume is like embarking on a small journey. What kind of scenery do you want to depict? What kind of atmosphere do you want to feel? Each fragrance serves as a guide on that path. The time spent handcrafting your own unique scent is a little special and a truly luxurious moment.

First, it begins with considering the theme of the scent. What kind of world do we want to step into? For example, "Floral," like strolling through an elegant flower garden; "Woody," feeling warmth amidst tranquility; or "Spicy," where the scent of spices evokes a mysterious foreign land. This initial question provides an exciting feeling, much like pointing out a destination on a map.

Next, you gather the fragrance ingredients. Each time you pick up an essential oil, you listen to the story it tells. For instance, the refreshing scent of bergamot might bring to mind a fresh breeze under a blue sky. Gently sniffing sandalwood might envelop your heart with the tranquility and warmth of stepping deep into a forest. In this moment, the fragrance transforms from a mere ingredient into something that connects with your heart.

When deciding on the composition of the fragrance, we consider the perfume's three notes: "top note," "middle note," and "base note." The top note is the beginning of the journey. It's light and determines the first impression. The middle note that follows is the main story that colors that journey. And the base note, which lingers last, is where you enjoy the afterglow of the story. How these three are combined gives a perfume its unique personality.

Once you begin blending, the process is very quiet and requires concentration. Dropping oil one drop at a time and adjusting the scent might feel similar to painting a picture on a canvas. After adding ethanol or carrier oil, mix well and wait for the fragrance to meld.

An important aspect of perfume making is the time spent "maturing." A newly blended fragrance is not yet fully harmonious. By allowing it to rest in a cool, dark place for one to two weeks, the fragrance molecules blend together, and the scent develops depth. This waiting period is a joy of anticipating the finished product, and it's a process that requires a little patience.

And when it's transferred into a bottle, your unique fragrance is complete. The moment you wear that scent, it feels like reaching the goal of a journey, or like a new adventure is about to begin.

Perfume making is not just "crafting." It's like a journey of confronting your own sensibilities and giving shape to seasons, memories, and inner landscapes through scent. A fragrance created with time and effort will surely hold special meaning and become a gentle magic that envelops you.
