What is Musk?

"Does it have a musk scent?"

This is the most common question we get asked in store.

It is available under a variety of brands, so it is one of the more famous perfume words and many people are fans of it.

It is also known to have a pheromone-like effect, so much so that there is an anecdote about a "peerless beauty wearing the scent of musk."

However, many people probably don't know what musk actually is.

Fragrances are broadly divided into plant-based fragrances and animal-based fragrances.

Musk is an animal-based fragrance; other common examples include amber, civet, and castoreum.

These originally came from animal intestines, secretions near the anus, and substances that remain in the body.

In the case of musk, it is extracted from the secretory glands of male musk deer.

Currently, the capture of musk deer is prohibited by the Washington Convention to protect wildlife.
It is recreated by perfumers around the world using synthetic fragrances.

It is difficult to say that a fragrance made only from animal-based ingredients will have a pleasant smell,
For example, adding a drop of musk to 100% grapefruit essential oil adds depth to the freshness, creating a story in the fragrance.

Layered Fragrances combines musk with vanilla, while other brands combine it with grapefruit.

The resulting scents are completely different, but it's interesting that they both have a "musk scent."

This time I wrote about musk.

Some people may have a different perspective now that they know that it comes from animals.

Try different brands to find the musk scent that you like.

We hope this will encourage you to further enjoy the profound world of fragrance.
